OUR CHRISTIAN NATION: WTF? IS JASON COLLINS A SINNER?
When Broussard on CNN said that Jason Collins could not be Christian, and others chimed in that he was a sinner, and furnished quotes from their bible in support of their nasty little prejudiced thoughts, it illuminated how the bible, when followed rigidly – like the Koran, can be against Humanity rather than supportive.
As an atheist I respect how others choose to relate to the universe, whether it is through the sacred or the profane (refer to; The Sacred and the Profane, Mircea Eliade). However, when the shared values of all religions and atheists become distorted by zealot fundamentalism and subverted by moralizing hypocrites, there is a reality problem. And today we are awash in pre-Dark Age creationist moralizers who would have everyone believe that Christ forgot about the poor, that lying is OK; and that the common good can be blocked by the Teapublican party that claims to be the true Christians.
Creationists believe that you cannot be Christian if you do not accept their lunatic view of creation and when it took place, so creationists siphon money from public education for their charter schools to make certain their children can avoid the last 300 years of intellectual progress, knowledge and enlightenment.
Who wants to live in this kind of nation – which is Republic founded on the ethic that the church and state should be separate? Here is some of what our founding fathers thought:
- THOMAS JEFFERSON: “CHRISTIANITY IS THE MOST PERVERTED SYSTEM THAT EVER SHONE ON MAN.”
- BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: “LIGHTHOUSES ARE MORE USEFUL THAN CHURCHES.”
- JAMES MADISON SUMED IT UP: “DURING ALMOST FIFTEEN CENTURIES HAS THE LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT OF CHRISTIANITY BEEN ON TRIAL. WHAT HAS BEEN ITS FRUITS? MORE OR LESS, IN ALL PLACES, PRIDE AND INDOLENCE IN THE CLERGY; IGNORANCE AND SERVILITY IN THE LAITY; IN BOTH, SUPERSTITION, BIGOTRY AND PERSECUTION.”
All the invoking the name of god in every public announcement goes against the principles of our Founding Fathers. The separation of church and state was blessed by all the men who founded this republic, and from their writings it seems, more likely than not, that many were atheists, or agnostic – at the very least, not rigid deists.
But here we are today with a Congress controlled by pre-Dark Age thought from the Teapublican blockaders of Congress, who in the name of Jesus, an orthodox Jew, have turned from science to the fundamentalist creationist beliefs of St. Thomas Aquinas – a leading example of the ignorance and servility in the laity that James Madison observed centuries ago. And the Koch pawns, who have announced that the United States of America is and was founded to be a Christian Nation, would not have surprised our founding fathers who endeavored to prevent this from happening. And what’s up with CNN!
Is it a form of mental rigor mortis to live within the boundaries of pre 15th century mysticism? When the world was flat, and the Sun circled the earth, and there was the comfortable certainty about where God resided.
Isn’t it time to move into the 21st century and stop all the moralizing from the 15th century to accept and connect with the present and fellow human beings at a higher level. Philosophies and political parties based on lies are not functional. Consider that the GOP has blockaded Congress by refusing to vote for anything for the common good. While it continues to support the sociopathic greed of Wall Street as well as Big Business CEOs by denying that Keynesian economics works and that regulations to control out of control greed are crucial to protecting society – especially the poor and the middle class that their personal Jesus allegedly cared for.
Who knows if Jesus was real, but it doesn’t matter; because what does matter are the ideas behind the teachings attributed to him and other great religious philosophers over 2,000 years ago, at a time when man needed more humanity toward his fellow man to survive.
So, after thinking about how I have been sucked into the moment, and vehemently erupted at religion and all the goddies (the hypocrites hiding their subhuman behavior and sociopathic greed and thirst for power behind religion) I have shared a higher view of the material substance of why no one should call America a “Christian Nation” – or call anyone who has a different sexual preference than they do a sinner.
If you want to be honest with yourself, and are the kind of Christian, Jew or Muslim (Eastern religions are already on a path toward enlightenment) that cares about humanity, the real sinners (not my kind of word or concept) are the ignorant zealots who use religion and their rigid interpretation of the “words” (according to men) of their deity as a sword to get their own way at the expense of the truth or empirical realities, which simply means at the expense of their fellow human beings.
Do we want to live in a country where the common good is not more important than moralizing hypocrites who declare this is a Christian Nation and subvert the common good at every opportunity by?
Voting against jobs bills:
- Supporting sociopathic, greed-based economic theories;
- 2nd Amendment lies;
- Hating gays, blacks, Jews, Catholics, Muslims and of course, Atheists;
- Supporting Citizens United;
- Abhorring the idea of health insurance for all;
- Not confirming 80 Federal Judges;
- Not changing tax laws gone terribly awry that redistributed mountain of wealth to the rich;
- Not supporting equal rights for all!
- Not providing enough support for public schools;
- Not caring about food stamps, school lunches or Headstart for children?
Is this a Christian Nation? Is this a great Nation? Is this what our forefathers envisioned?

“This should be must-reading for every policy maker in Washington and every student of economics and finance.”
